4 Pipe System

A 4 pipe system is a popular installation method for selected Viessmann Vitodens system boilers when installed with a compatible unvented hot water cylinder.
This arrangement can simplify installation by allowing the boiler to control both the heating circuit and the domestic hot water cylinder directly.
What Is a 4 Pipe System?
In a 4 pipe installation, separate flow and return connections are used for the heating circuit and the hot water cylinder circuit.
This allows the boiler to manage space heating and cylinder heating efficiently, using Viessmann controls and a compatible cylinder temperature sensor.
Installation Benefits
When correctly specified and installed, a 4 pipe system may reduce installation time and simplify the system layout.
Depending on the boiler model and cylinder arrangement, the following external components may not be required:
- Energy cut-off valve.
- Separate cylinder safety control arrangement.
- Additional cylinder overheat thermostat.
- Additional pump and controls for the hot water circuit.
- Some associated electrical wiring and certification requirements.
Important Compatibility Information
A 4 pipe arrangement is product and system specific. It must only be used where the boiler, cylinder, controls and installation design are suitable for this type of connection.
A compatible Viessmann cylinder temperature sensor is normally required. Please refer to the relevant boiler product page and the Accessories tab for compatible sensor options.
The installer should always check the latest Viessmann installation instructions before specifying or installing a 4 pipe system.
Building Regulations & Safety
Unvented hot water systems must be installed by a suitably qualified professional and must comply with current Building Regulations, including G3 requirements where applicable.
Viessmann system boilers include integrated control and safety functions which may simplify compliance when used in an approved 4 pipe configuration.
Final responsibility for correct system design, installation, commissioning and regulatory compliance remains with the installer.
